Quicksilver Gondola opens

Surrounded by eager skiers and snowboarders, longtime Park City Mountain Resort employee Brian Suhadolc, now the resort’s mountain manager, smashed a bottle of champagne against one of the new Quicksilver Gondola’s support towers, christening the new lift and welcoming guests aboard.

Though gondola cars officially began transporting guests on Thursday, a kick-off celebration was held Friday morning amid sunshine and fresh snow. Joining Suhadolc for the ceremony were Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz and COO Bill Rock, among other Vail and Park City VIPs.

Shortly after Katz and Rock spoke to the assembled crowd, a DJ began spinning live music and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the nearby Miners Camp restaurant as skiers and snowboarders piled into the gondola to explore the new terrain.

Rock said it’s exhilarating for him and his team to finally connect the two resorts after several months of hard work.

“We love it,” he said. “Our team is so excited to show the world what we’ve been able to do this summer. The improvements are just spectacular.”

The connection between Park City Mountain Resort and Canyons creates the biggest ski resort in the United States, offering 40 lifts, 314 runs and 7,300 acres of skiable terrain.

Rock said the timing couldn’t be better for the opening of the Quicksilver Gondola.

“The weather has been fantastic the last week — good snowmaking weather and great natural snow,” he said. “There’s a great forecast right before Christmas, too. This is right when we wanted to open it and Mother Nature worked out for us.

Rock was curious to see what guests thought of the new lift, so he spent some time Thursday riding it back and forth.

“I rode with a bunch of guests,” he said. “A lot of folks were trying it out [Thursday]. They love it. It’s quick — eight-and-a-half, nine minutes, very smooth. It’s got spectacular views of Park City. It’s going to be an iconic part of our resort.”

Now that the gondola and the other projects that were part of this summer’s $50 million in capital improvements are finished and open, Rock said it’s time to relax for a while before figuring out the resort’s next step.

“We’re going to have a great season,” he laughed. “That’s the next step.”

Deer Valley to open Dec. 5

Resort will kick off winter with annual Celebrity Skifest

When Deer Valley Resort opens for the winter season next Saturday, Dec. 5, it will do so with a familiar event.

For the 24th year, Deer Valley will host the Celebrity Skifest. Held Dec. 5-6, the event will feature four teams of celebrities, each led by an Olympic athlete. Deer Valley Ambassador of Skiing Heidi Voelker will lead one squad, while Phil and Steve Mahre and Tommy Moe will lead the others.

Celebrities like Nicole Curtis, Dylan Bruno, Cheryl Hines and JB Smoove will be in attendance, along with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the founder of the Waterkeeper Alliance, the organization the event will benefit.

Deer Valley President and General Manager Bob Wheaton said the Skifest is a great way to kick off the winter season.

“It’s fun because of the festivities and excitement that event brings to opening weekend, not to mention the outstanding benefit it brings to the Waterkeeper Alliance,” he said. “They do great work around the world.”

The Waterkeeper Alliance is a grassroots environmental movement that “helps to defend communities against anyone who threatens their right to clean water — from law-breaking polluters to unresponsive government agencies.”

Elsewhere on the mountain, Deer Valley will announce what terrain will be open for opening day either Tuesday or Wednesday at deervalley.com. Wheaton said the resort is ready to get the winter season started.

“The atmosphere is pretty positive, to say the least,” he said.

Historic Park City’s Electric Parade will usher in the holiday season

Park City’s annual Electric Parade is a way for families and friends to see Christmas and other holiday lights. But instead of piling into cars and driving through illuminated neighborhoods, people can stand on Historic Main Street as the parade brings the lights to them, said the parade’s marketing director Meisha Lawson.

“A police escort and the Main Street Trolley lead the way,” Lawson told The Park Record. “The parade starts at City Park and runs up to Ninth Street then up Main Street and down Swede Alley to Heber Avenue and back to the park.”

This year’s parade will be held on Saturday, Nov. 28, and will begin at 5:30 p.m.

This is the third year the event will coincide with Small Business Saturday, according to Lawson.

“Previously the parade took place on the Winter Solstice,” she said. “The problem was the day of the week shifted every year, and it was hard for people to make their plans.”

Consequently, the parade didn’t have a strong spectator crowd.

“That changed when we shifted the date,” Lawson said. “We wanted it to serve as a kickoff to the holiday season and it has been very successful from a spectator standpoint.”

Last year, more than 2,500 people came to watch the parade.

“What we would really like to happen is to have more people enter floats,” Lawson said. “For the past few years, we have featured 10 entrants, and we want more, because we want to put on a better show for those who come to

The resorts are open and it is time time to ski! Park City held it’s Opening Day for the 2015-2016 season on Saturday Nov. 21. Vail Resorts CEO Bill Rock welcomed the crowd then the First Chair Banner-Breaking Ceremony was held when Bennett Barbosa, Max Larson, Garrett Christensen, Jaxon Gordon, Porter Fox and Heather Leavitt were the first guests at the top of the PayDay lift.
